Wetting Properties and surface energy by contact angle measurements

A requirement for good results in bonding, printing, painting, laminating, coating and dyeing on polymeric or painted components is often sufficient wetting and thus a corresponding surface energy. Various characterization methods are available for characterizing the wetting properties of inks, coatings, adhesives and substrates. These include a tensiometer as well as drop shape analysis systems for automated contact angle measurements on substrates or hanging drop measurements. These can also be used to separate polar, disperse, basic as well as acidic components of the surface energy with different models.

Wetting, adhesion and long-term stability can also be enhanced by surface pretreatment methods. Various activation methods such as atmospheric pressure or low-pressure plasma, VUV irradiation, flame treatment, corona and laser are available for this purpose.
